For professional drivers holding C, C1, CE, D, D1 or DE classes, medical fitness forms part of every renewal. Employment or a driver qualification certificate does not by itself continue the driving entitlement.

Review the expiry date, affected classes, age at renewal and status of the medical assessment together. Professional qualification and medical fitness are separate requirements.

Heavy vehicle classes belong to medical group 2

Section 1(9) FSG-GV places C, C1, CE, D, D1 and DE in group 2. Where concerns arise, section 3(3) requires the overall assessment to give particular weight to the additional risks of those vehicles.

Our medical invitation guide explains how to organise requested reports.

Which renewal records are complete?

The check organises classes, expiry date and medical records.

Which renewal records are complete?
Level What applies What remains separate
Driving entitlement five years, two years after 60 driver qualification
Medical assessment required for every renewal occupational health records
Individual condition its own date and evidence general expiry date

Each level needs its own evidence.

Five years and two years after age 60 are the basic periods

Section 17a(2) FSG permits group 2 classes for five years and only two years after age 60. Every renewal requires a medical assessment under section 8 FSG.

Read the licence expiry date together with the authority decision. Workforce planning does not replace timely filing.

The assessment examines more than one medical report

Section 3(2) FSG-GV covers medical history, general impression, vision, hearing, cardiovascular checks, movement and tremor. Group 2 has stricter requirements in several areas.

Special reports may require an official medical assessment under section 8(2) FSG. The glossary entry on official medical assessment explains its function.

Driver qualification and the entitlement are separate

A driver qualification certificate concerns professional competence. It replaces neither a valid entitlement nor the medical assessment required for renewal. A positive assessment does not prove completion of separate professional training.

Record the expiry dates for the document, entitlement, medical evidence and qualification separately.

Timely filing needs reliable evidence

For a health-related time limit, section 8(5) FSG may allow driving for no more than three months in Austria under narrow conditions. It is not an automatic extension. Our three month provision guide explains filing, authority confirmation and absence of fault.

The medical assessment focus area connects examination, conditions and renewal.

Individual conditions may accompany the standard period

Section 2 FSG-GV allows repeat examinations, periodic checks, aids and further restrictions. Individual conditions are separate from the standard five or two year period.

Read codes and conditions on the licence together with the decision. Missing periodic reports may trigger separate authority action.
