In Austria, category A1 permits the holder to ride certain light motorcycles. Several technical limits apply together: no more than 125 cc, no more than 11 kW engine power and no more than 0.1 kW/kg for the power-to-empty-weight ratio.

The minimum age for granting the entitlement is 16. A person applying for category A1 should therefore check the age for starting training, the application through the driving school and the technical data of the exact motorcycle separately. Category B or Code 111 does not automatically replace category A1.

For category A1, engine capacity, power and power-to-weight ratio must all remain within the statutory limits. A 125 cc motorcycle is therefore not automatically an A1 vehicle if its power or power-to-weight ratio is too high.

Which vehicles are covered by category A1?

Section 2(1)(2) FSG covers motorcycles, with or without a sidecar, of up to 125 cc, with engine power of no more than 11 kW and a power-to-empty-weight ratio of no more than 0.1 kW/kg. These technical values apply together. Engine capacity alone or a sales-platform description is therefore insufficient for the classification.

Category A1 also covers three-wheeled motor vehicles with power of no more than 15 kW. That limit concerns the three-wheeled vehicle type and must be distinguished from the limits for motorcycles. For each vehicle, compare the registration certificate, type plate and technical data.

Keep A1, AM, A2 and B distinct

The name used for a motorcycle does not alone determine the required driving entitlement.

Which category covers which vehicle group
Category Core scope Decisive check
A1 Motorcycles up to 125 cc, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg; three-wheeled vehicles up to 15 kW All technical limits must be met together
AM Mopeds and four-wheeled light vehicles The vehicle type does not fall under A1 merely because its power is low
A2 Motorcycles up to 35 kW and 0.2 kW/kg, subject to the statutory derivation limits The higher power limits describe another category
B Cars and other vehicle groups covered by the statutory category A category B entitlement is not automatically an A1 entitlement

The table does not replace a review of the vehicle documents. The entitlement entered on the licence and the technical data of the vehicle remain decisive.

At what age is category A1 granted?

Under section 6(1)(2) FSG, granting category A1 requires the applicant to have reached the age of 16. The person must therefore be 16 before the driving entitlement can be granted. The minimum age for granting the entitlement must be kept separate from the start of training.

Section 6(2) FSG allows theoretical and practical driving-school training to begin no earlier than six months before the required minimum age is reached. For A1, training can therefore generally start before the sixteenth birthday. The driving entitlement remains subject to completion of the sixteenth year.

How is the category A1 application handled?

Section 5 FSG links an application for a driving entitlement, among other things, to the age required for the driving training. The application is submitted through the driving school attended by the applicant. The driving school records it in the driving licence register and starts the administrative procedure.

Before the practical test, it should be clear which motorcycle will be used and what its technical data are. A motorcycle exceeding the A1 limits does not fit the intended category. Keep training records, examination documents and the vehicle data together so that the classification can be traced.

Why engine capacity and power must be checked together

A motorcycle with exactly 125 cc can fall outside the A1 scope because its engine power exceeds 11 kW. Conversely, low power does not help if the engine capacity exceeds 125 cc. The power-to-empty-weight ratio must also remain at or below 0.1 kW/kg.

Calculate the power-to-weight ratio using reliable technical data for the exact motorcycle. After a modification or a vehicle change, verify the classification again. If the figures conflict, resolve the issue before riding. A verbal statement by another person does not replace the vehicle documents.

How A1 differs from A2 and Code 111

Section 2(1)(3) FSG assigns category A2 to motorcycles of up to 35 kW and a power-to-empty-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW/kg, subject to further statutory limits for derived vehicles. A2 is therefore a separate motorcycle category with a different power framework. Any later progression from A2 to A is a separate question.

Code 111 is connected with category B and does not automatically grant category A1. Check the original driving licence for the category, code and any restrictions. The guidance on Code 111 and motorcycles up to 125 cc explains this boundary in more detail.

Which documents should be ready before riding?

  • driving licence showing the category A1 entry
  • registration certificate and technical data of the motorcycle
  • engine capacity, power and empty-weight data
  • documents concerning a conversion or technical modification
  • training and examination records for a new entitlement

If an authority has issued a notice or the entry is unclear, arrange the complete file and proof of service. The guidance on a time-limited driving entitlement illustrates why the actual document and its conditions must be reviewed separately.

01 Question 1

Is the person at least 16 for the entitlement to be granted?

All paths at a glance

Overview of all answers.

01

The minimum age for granting the entitlement has not been reached or established.

Arrange the date of birth and the planned training start. Category A1 can be granted only after the sixteenth birthday.

Review the licence entry and conditions →
02

Training and granting the entitlement must be reviewed separately.

Check the driving-school application, training records and the planned granting date. Training may start earlier under the statutory conditions.

Distinguish motorcycle entitlements →
03

The technical vehicle data do not yet establish an A1 classification.

Compare the registration certificate, power, engine capacity and empty weight. The current classification must also be clear after a modification.

Compare motorcycle limits →
04

The available information is broadly consistent with the A1 check.

Keep the driving licence and vehicle documents together. If an authority has issued a notice or the entry differs, the complete file should be reviewed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about category A1

How much engine capacity may an A1 motorcycle have? +
A motorcycle in category A1 may generally have no more than 125 cc. Engine power must also be no more than 11 kW and the power-to-empty-weight ratio no more than 0.1 kW/kg.
At what age is category A1 granted? +
Under section 6(1)(2) FSG, the applicant must have reached the age of 16. Training may begin under section 6(2) FSG no earlier than six months before that minimum age.
Does a 125 cc motorcycle automatically qualify for A1? +
No. Engine capacity, engine power and power-to-weight ratio must all remain within the statutory limits. Three-wheeled vehicles have a separate power limit.
Are category B or Code 111 the same as A1? +
No. Category B or Code 111 does not automatically create the separate category A1 entitlement. The entry on the driving licence is decisive.
Which documents should be available for the review? +
Keep the driving licence, registration certificate, technical vehicle data and training or examination records together. Current documents for modifications are important as well.
