Code 95 on the driving document: entry after driver qualification

Code 95 is the harmonised European proof that a driver has met the professional qualification requirement for certain vehicles used to carry goods or passengers. The Austrian government information describes Code 95 as an administrative code on the driving licence and links it to a date. The relevant evidence is therefore the entry and its validity date, not attendance at a course alone.

The current European framework is Directive (EU) 2022/2561 on the initial qualification and periodic training of drivers. It allows the harmonised code to appear on the driving licence or on a driver qualification card. Completion of periodic training and visible updating of a licence card are different steps. After the course, check which confirmation was issued and whether the competent Austrian driving-licence authority requires an application, a new card or another qualification document for the specific case.

Keep the confirmation, application, authority correspondence and new card together. If Code 95 is missing after completed training, first clarify whether the documents have not yet been processed, whether a separate card is intended or whether the entry contains the wrong date or vehicle class.

The code does not decide whether a driving entitlement is valid, time-limited or subject to an individual condition. Conversely, a vehicle class entry does not by itself prove the professional qualification required for commercial goods or passenger transport. For work planning, record the licence, the Code 95 date and the professional evidence separately.

This distinction matters where the correct class appears on the card but the code or its date does not. The immediate issue is then the document and authority record. File inspection in driving-licence proceedings can show which records arrived and what the authority actually decided.
