You may drive an agricultural tractor abroad with an Austrian Class F entitlement only if the state concerned recognises that entitlement. Section 2(4)(3) of the Austrian Driving Licence Act (FSG) limits Class F to traffic in Austria and in states that have recognised it.
Article 4 of Directive 2006/126/EC lists the harmonised vehicle categories. Austria’s Class F is outside that list. Before travelling, check the rules of the destination and every transit state.
Section 2(4)(3) FSG expressly includes Class F among the entitlements that apply to traffic in Austria and in states that have recognised them. The entry on your Austrian licence proves that Austria issued the entitlement.
Austrian law separately sets the conditions for obtaining Class F and the vehicles it covers. For an overseas journey, recognition by the destination state is decisive.
Article 2(1) of Directive 2006/126/EC provides for mutual recognition of driving licences issued by Member States. Article 4 defines the harmonised vehicle categories. Austria’s Class F is not included in that list.
The directive creates no separate EU-wide recognition for the specific Class F entitlement. Recognition under national law depends on the state concerned. Name Class F expressly when requesting confirmation.
Contact the authority responsible for driving licences or road traffic in the destination state. Ask whether it recognises an Austrian driving licence with Class F for the planned tractor use. Put two questions separately: is the Austrian licence document valid there, and does the state accept the listed Class F entitlement for this journey?
Provide the licence entry and the tractor’s details, such as make, model and registration documents. Describe the planned journey and the period of use. Request a written reply and keep it with the vehicle documents.
For a multi-country route, request a separate answer from the destination state and every transit state. List all countries where you intend to drive the tractor in public traffic before contacting the authorities.
Carry your valid Austrian driving licence and the tractor’s registration documents. Ask your insurer separately to confirm whether the agreed cover extends to the planned use in each relevant country. Keep state recognition of Class F and contractual insurance cover as separate checks.
Check the Austrian licence entry and recognition in every state on the route.
